The Busia-Tororo Road spans 25 kilometers currently in a murram gravel condition. The condition reduces the road’s serviceability in terms of comfort, capacity, and travel time. The road connects the trade hubs of Tororo and Busia Towns, located in Uganda’s Eastern region, which are in close proximity to Kenya.
The favored route between Busia and Tororo at the moment is the 45-kilometer-long, paved Busia – Busitema – Tororo route. The Busia-Tororo Road, which runs for about 25 kilometers and is the shortest route between the two towns, will cut the distance traveled by about 20 kilometers.
The project was funded by the Ugandan government, and China Railway 18th Bureau Group Co Ltd. was given the contract. Since the project started, it is now at 29.74% as of May 2023.
The Busia-Tororo road (25.0 km), the Busia border road (1.0 km), and the Mayuge and Busia town roads (18.0 km) are all included in the project.
In the right of way, 183.188 acres of land are occupied by 1,173 people as part of the project. Since funding from the Government of Uganda are still pending, payment to the Project Affected Persons (PAPS) has not yet started. This presents substantial difficulties for the contractor as they wait to take complete ownership of the required site. The entire amount of money due is 32,769,886,828 UGX.
As the purchase process moves forward, the UNRA and the contractor keep in contact with the PAPs to secure their permission to carry out the work.
