Ben Kumumanya, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, has praised Mpanga Market as a vital component of economic expansion and a major driver of raising living standards in Fort Portal City and the neighboring communities.
Mr. Kumumanya praised the market’s important role in promoting the Parish Development Model (PDM) during a recent visit, stressing its significance in giving farmers access to dependable marketplaces.
“Mpanga and other contemporary markets are essential for promoting economic growth and stability. Speaking to vendors and local authorities, he stated, “They act as centers for advancement and opportunities, which benefit traders as well as the greater community.”
He promised to work with Fort Portal City authorities to address issues experienced by traders and reassured vendors of the government’s support.
Market merchants thanked the establishment, pointing out that its well-organized setting has significantly increased trade and improved working conditions.
With 600 stalls, 200 stores, and 400 pitches, Mpanga Market was built in 2013 as part of the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Program (MATIP), which was supported by the African Development Bank.
It continues to be Fort Portal City’s biggest market and an important source of income for the area.
To guarantee that the market continues to be a model for regional economic development, local leaders have appealed for more funding to improve facilities and give merchants more assistance.
“We are committed to ensuring markets like Mpanga thrive and continue to transform lives,” Mr. Kumumanya said, reinforcing the government’s commitment to empowering local companies.
