After been granted permission by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to stage important continental competitions, Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo has reached yet another significant milestone in its quick ascent to prominence as a top sports venue. The news highlights Uganda’s dedication to creating top-notch athletic facilities and reinforces the nation’s expanding role in African football.
The stadium, which opened to the public on June 1, 2024, has been approved to host the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup preliminary rounds, as well as the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifying and final tournaments and the men’s U17, U20, and U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) competitions. CAF highlighted the facility’s importance in improving the caliber of competition on the continent and praised it for its commitment to the growth of African football.
Following a slew of foreign sponsorships for Hamz Stadium, this recognition follows. FIFA President Gianni Infantino personally granted the stadium’s turf an official FIFA accreditation in October 2024. Earlier this year, the facility was also nominated for a coveted Global Award, making it one of the best sports venues in the world.
The accomplishment was credited to the combined efforts of Uganda’s government and sports leadership by Rogers Mulindwa, chairman of the Hamz Stadium Management Committee. He thanked FUFA President Moses Magogo, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni, and President Yoweri Museveni for their dedication to improving Ugandan football.
“This is a win for Uganda and African football, not just for Hamz Stadium,” Mulindwa stated. “As we host these esteemed tournaments, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards, giving Uganda a chance to shine on the continental stage and fostering the growth of talent.”
Beyond just football, the CAF permission is anticipated to have a significant impact on Uganda’s tourism sector, drawing tourists from around the world and encouraging the development of fresh talent. With its cutting-edge amenities and widespread reputation, Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo is poised to establish itself as a major African football stadium and a representation of Uganda’s growing power in international sports.
