Alebtong district in northern Uganda has started road construction projects worth Sh1 billion to increase connectivity and create transportation.
Major inaccessible highways are involved in the maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation activities.
The projects were officially unveiled on Friday by government Chief Whip and Ajuri County MP Denis Hamson Obua.
The four subcounties of Adwir, Awei, Aloi, and Abia contain the targeted highways.
Bush clearance, complete grading, and spot graveling are all included in the scope of work, according to Tom Richard Opio, the Alebtong district superintendent of works in charge of roads and construction.
The improvements were started in the Adwir sub-county.
Roads in districts, cities, and municipalities all throughout the country are in poor condition and require such assistance, Obua praised the government for the initiative and expressed his admiration.
In order to increase connectivity and make it easier to transport produce to markets, he continued, each district, city, and municipality will receive an additional Sh1 billion during the current fiscal year (2023/2024).
In this first quarter alone, the government in Alebtong has already given sh250 million, and it will keep doing so until it reaches sh1 billion at the end of the fiscal year, according to Obua.
In order to get the most value for their money, he advised the locals to stay watchful and make sure the roads are properly maintained.
David Kennedy Odongo, the district chairperson, claimed that they had located several roads in the districts that had become impassable and that, under the new plan, they would be completely fixed.
He said that the Ayumu Bridge, which connects Alebtong to the Teso sub-region, will be repaired, as promised by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The district’s female MP and chairman of the district road committee is Dorcas Acen. She stated that during this fiscal year, maintenance needs to be done on 17 roads and 1 bridge.
Robert Abinaitwe, the district’s chief administrative officer, stated that the district’s roads are in disrepair and that they are pleased with the allocation of cash to repair them.
