In an effort to increase the efficiency of the sector, boda boda operators nationwide have released a new union app that links passengers and travelers.
As part of the larger National Boda Boda Stage Development effort, the inaugural event, with the subject “Empowering Boda Boda Riders for Growth,” is being held at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
Speaking at the event, Union Chairperson Frank Mawenje stated that when boda boda riders attended a patriotic training at Kaweweta, the app’s concept became a reality.
As a rider herself, Mawenje emphasized that the union’s work will shield riders against extortion.
“We will no longer pay Ssh11 million for a motorcycle that costs Shs5 million,” Mawenje stated.
“Middlemen who have taken advantage of riders, especially those selling bikes on installment plans, will no longer exploit us.”
To further assist riders’ financial empowerment, the organization also founded the United Boda Boda Riders Cooperative organization, a savings and credit cooperative (SACCO).
The union’s legal counsel, Fred Muwema, stressed that the group is dedicated to transforming the public’s perception of boda boda riders.
“These are no longer lawbreakers,” he declared. “The union will provide legal avenues to address the challenges faced by riders.”
The union will act as the nation’s boda boda operators’ umbrella organization.
The launch, which was attended by representatives from the northern, western, eastern, and central areas, was a major step toward bringing cyclists together across the country.
