In order to enable people, businesses, and communities to fully participate in the digital economy and access necessary services to improve living standards, the government has devised a roadmap for digital transformation.

The Digital Transformation Roadmap, the first of its type in Uganda, is a source of pride and hope for the country as it seeks to use digital technology as a leveling agent for inhabitants in rural and urban areas.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of ICT and national guidance, the roadmap “seeks to bridge the digital divide that has historically hampered opportunities for marginalized communities” with a heavy focus on inclusivity and empowerment.

Vice-President Jessica Alupo is scheduled to announce the much-anticipated initiative on August 17, 2023. It is being led by the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance and the education ministry, with assistance from the United Nations Development Program Uganda (UNDP) and Centenary Technology Services.

The publication of Uganda’s first Digital Transformation Roadmap, according to a statement from Dr. Aminah Zawedde, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of ICT, symbolizes a time of pride and excitement for our country.

“With this transformative blueprint, we aim to create a Uganda where digital technology becomes a powerful equaliser between rural and urban citizens, leaving no one behind in our pursuit of progress and prosperity,” adds Zawedde.

The fundamental themes of the roadmap are inclusivity and empowerment, with a particular emphasis on closing the digital divide, which has historically limited opportunities for people living in distant and underserved places.

The plan intends to empower people, businesses, and communities to fully participate in the digital economy and access necessary services that can enhance quality of life by maximizing the potential of digital technology.

According to the ministry, Uganda’s vision for the transformative roadmap and UNDP’s strategic aim of “creating a world in which digital is an empowering force for people and planet” are fully compatible.

According to the statement, “With UNDP’s support, the country is poised to unlock the vast potential of digital technology, fostering sustainable development and social progress that benefits both people and the environment.”

The ministry asserts that the country’s will to embrace digital transformation as a driver of advancement and inclusivity is evidence of its dedication to building a better future for all.

With technical assistance from Centenary Technology Services, the technology arm of the Centenary Group, UNDP Uganda developed the Digital Transformation Roadmap.

According to the ministry, “Ugandans are ready to set out on an unprecedented journey of innovation and prosperity with the roadmap as their compass, creating a country where digital technology empowers and uplifts every citizen, regardless of their background or location.”

The statement claims that Uganda’s digital transformation will change the game for inclusive progress and serve as an example for other countries to follow.
