This fiscal year, the National Information Technology Authority – Uganda (NITA-U) and the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) have cut the cost of internet service from $70 to $35 per Mbps per month.

This action will make it easier for Ugandans to access and afford government services.

This was released at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala during the introduction of the new internet price.

Speaking to reporters, Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for ICT, claimed that NITA-U will result in significant savings for the government’s communication budget, spur the adoption of E-Government Services, and deepen digitalization after the audacious step.

According to Baryomunsi, “The landmark accomplishment solidifies the Government’s position as the undeniable market leader in setting internet prices.”

The actions made today will encourage other private internet service providers to imitate them, which will be advantageous for all Ugandans in every way.

He pointed out that the government has prioritized the issue of ICT and is allocating additional resources for investments and collaborations with tech firms to produce smartphones locally.

He stated, “This fronts accessibility and affordability for everyone.”

The Executive Director of NITA-U, Hatwib Mugasa, claims that the organization has been working hard to steadily reduce the price of internet bandwidth in Uganda, particularly for government institutions because they offer onward services to common residents and the business sector as well.
