Manufacturing firms are progressively locating in Luweero, transforming it into an emerging industrial hub.

The most recent entry is Go Cylinder, an Asian company that has a multi-million dollar gas cylinder manufacturing business.

The new facility, located near Bombo town on the Kampala Gulu Highway, was commissioned on Thursday by the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, Francis Mwebesa.

According to Mwebesa, the government would acquire the majority of the cylinders produced at the new plant for free distribution to people.

When gas extraction begins in the Albertine region, the Ugandan government aims to deliver approximately 1 million 13 kilogram gas cylinders to families through the Ministry of Energy.

The anticipated change is consistent with the government’s long-term goal of pushing gas as an alternative to firewood and charcoal.

Minister Mwebesa praised the management of Go Cylinders Limited for selecting Uganda during the factory’s commissioning.

According to Mwebesa, the new plant brings the total number of such industrial organizations in Uganda to two.

Mwebesa stated that Uganda will import $5.5 million in gas cylinders in 2021. He stated that the new facility, in addition to producing jobs, was an important component of the import substitution strategy.

According to Mwebesa, the cylinder manufacturing sub-sector is likely to expand further due to the country’s increased need for cylinders and the expanding oil and gas industry.

Ali Tawfiq, Managing Director of Go Cylinder, requested government assistance in ensuring a steady power supply and rehabilitating the road leading to the facility.

At the launch, Luweero LC5 chairman Erastro Kibirango told visitors that the crumbling access road will be repaired shortly under the district budget.

Denis Ainebyona, the Minister of Trade’s Commissioner for Industry, stated that Go Cylinder Products are of good quality and have been officially approved by UNBS.

The gas cylinder plant opens around a year after President Museveni opened a 12 billion pound leather factory in Kawumu, still in the Luweero area.

According to Alice Kaboyo, the state minister for Luweero, there are around 200 manufacturing enterprises functioning in the old Luweero triangle.

Other major industrial units in the region include the Nakaseke-based Kapeeka Industrial Park and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces’ (UPDF) Luweero Industries in Nakasongola.
