Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and MPs inspect the status of Katonga bridge construction. On Tuesday 7/11/2023, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa led a delegation of MPs to check the status of the Katonga bridge building works along the Kampala-Masaka route.

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) executive director Allen Kagina and her colleagues greeted the Deputy Speaker.

Tayebwa will also observe ongoing construction on the Busega-Mpigi Expressway, accompanied by MPs, as part of Parliament’s oversight of government initiatives.

According to UNRA, the proposed diversion at Katonga is rapidly taking shape; the steel bridge construction on the opposite side has now been successfully erected.

UNRA prohibited 69-seater buses from utilizing the restored part of the River Katonga Bridge in May 2023. Engineers had to first conduct structural evaluations to evaluate whether bigger vehicles like as freight trucks, buses, and trailers could utilize the bridge, according to UNRA spokesperson Allan Ssempebwa.

On May 11, flash floods washed away section of the River Katonga bridge, closing the Kampala-Masaka route. Motorists were forced to use a significantly longer detour route through Mpigi, Butambala, Gomba, Sembabule, Bukomansimbi, Nyendo, and Masaka.
