John R. Musinguzi, the Commissioner General of the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), and the Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) recently had conversations. Their discussion at the URA headquarters in Nakawa was centered around the new cargo monitoring system that was going to be put into place.

South Sudan and Uganda Collaborate on Innovative Cargo Monitoring System

Mande expressed worries on lower-than-expected Customs receipts and stressed the necessity of taking immediate action to increase revenue. He revealed a ground-breaking partnership between SSRA and INVESCO, a tech startup that will offer state-of-the-art cargo-tracking services. Mande declared, “Invesco’s services will help us improve collections and even exceed our targets,” demonstrating his faith in the company’s offerings.

The main component of this partnership is the use of cargo tracking technology, which will be easily integrated with their current system and used to extract knowledge from URA’s experience. Effective freight management has been greatly aided by URA, which tracks cargo in transit via the Regional Electronic freight Tracking System (RECTS).
In his remarks during the meeting, John Musinguzi stressed the significance of using technology for what it was designed for—that is, to improve cargo administration and management. He emphasized the two revenue bodies’ long history of cooperation, highlighting their willingness to integrate their systems.

Attending the conference, South Sudan’s ambassador to Uganda, Simon Juach Deng, reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to aiding Uganda’s efforts to facilitate trade. The two countries’ partnership is further strengthened by this diplomatic gesture.

Beyond this recent breakthrough, URA and SSRA have been working together. The authorities reaffirmed their commitment to further collaboration on a range of trade facilitation projects last year when they inked a bilateral agreement. Due to these collaborative efforts, trade has significantly increased between South Sudan and Uganda, with South Sudan currently being Uganda’s second-most popular export destination in East Africa.

This calculated action has the potential to greatly boost economic growth and facilitate trade between South Sudan and Uganda in addition to streamlining cargo control procedures.
