The first 5G home broadband device was introduced today by Airtel Uganda, the country’s first 5G network, with the goal of improving connectivity in Uganda. The new development was revealed today, November 29, 2023, at the Uganda Golf Club during the Airtel – Wednesday Night Golf monthly mug event.

The use of home broadband internet has been increasing over time, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic has helped to accelerate this growth. Demand for home internet increased during the shutdown as people were accustomed to working from home, doing their coursework online, and starting businesses online, among other changes. Internet service providers (ISPs) have had to come up with creative ways to satisfy the increasing demand from their clientele so that they can take advantage of the various benefits offered by the internet, including quick downloads, buffer-free live video streaming, easy work from home options, and online gaming.

Denis Kahindi, Director of Home Broadband at Airtel Uganda, stated: “We made headlines in August by becoming the first network to implement the ground-breaking 5G setup. Now, expanding on that ground-breaking accomplishment, we are pleased to announce that we are Uganda’s first network to roll out 5G Home Broadband (HBB), creating new benchmarks for connection.

“Imagine being able to monitor your business complex in real-time and making sure everything is in perfect order, all thanks to our 5G HBB device’s seamless connectivity,” he continued. Imagine having more peace of mind to take time off and play more golf with improved home security. We enable our customers to improve their lifestyle and boldly embrace the digital future with the 5G HBB gadget.

It costs 250,000 U.S. dollars and can fit up to 25 passengers. Following purchase, consumers will have to sign up for affordable monthly data plans, such 90GB for UGX 75,000, 130GB for UGX 100,000, and 220GB for UGX 150,000. Any installation support can be obtained by our customers by visiting any of our service centers.

The Uganda Communications Commission’s (UCC) Q3 Report states that over the three months ending in March 2023, internet traffic increased by 9.2 million gigabytes, from 129.3 gigabytes at the end of December 2022 to 138.5 million gigabytes in downloads. This was mostly ascribed to the advantages of last-mile fixed internet connections, which act as the last link between a provider’s network and a residence or building, which have led to the ongoing adoption of internet usage by households, enterprise businesses, and SMEs.

The 5G network, a 5th generation mobile network intended to link almost everyone and everything together, including machines, objects, and gadgets at extremely fast speeds, was launched countrywide by telecoms firms this year. It provides more users with more consistent user experiences, huge network capacity, faster multi-Gbps peak data speeds, and increased reliability.

The established locations will support newly developed 5G technologies, such the 5G HBB device for home internet access.

Kahindi went on to emphasize that the 5G HBB gadget is your doorway to an endless array of opportunities, regardless of how you use the internet—for gaming, leisure, streaming, or remote business. It is more than just a gadget; it is a gateway to limitless possibilities that constantly gives our clients a reason to imagine.

“We would also like to thank our clients for entrusting us with their connectivity needs as we introduce this revolutionary technology, and I cordially invite you to join us on this exciting adventure. In conclusion, Kahindi stated, “The 5G Home Broadband device is more than just a product; it’s a promise of a connected future where possibilities are endless.”
