Presidents Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Samia Suluhu Hassan officially launched the integration of the Ugandan and Tanzanian ICT backbone infrastructure in Isingiro District on 26 May 23, marking a significant turning point in the bilateral relations between the two countries. This momentous accomplishment brings both countries closer together in their pursuit of dependable and fast internet connectivity, which is essential for promoting socio-economic development.

The National Information Technology Uganda (NITA-U) was instructed, through its parent ministry, to contact the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) as soon as possible to access affordable internet services through the Tanzanian National ICT Broadband Backbone, per the visionary directive issued by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on March 16, 2023.

A pair of dedicated Fiber Optic Cables (FOC) were deployed at Mutukula, No Man’s Land, creating an alternate route to the undersea cables through Tanzania in a spectacular physical bridging of the Uganda and Tanzania National ICT backbones (NICTBB>NBI).

Several important goals will be attained by the integration of the ICT backbone infrastructure between Tanzania and Uganda;

The creation of strong infrastructure, including fiber optic cables, network nodes, and data centers, is required for this historic commissioning. These developments lay a solid foundation for effective and dependable internet access, enabling people and businesses to prosper in the digital age.

Encourage cross-border cooperation: The recently installed internet link makes it possible for enterprises, institutes of higher learning, and governmental organizations in Tanzania and Uganda to exchange information easily.
This improved connectivity will enable collaboration, knowledge sharing, and cooperative research projects, resulting in previously unheard-of economic growth and technological advancement for both Tanzania and Uganda.

Expansion of Digital Services: With the establishment of a direct internet link between Tanzania and Uganda, a wide range of digital services, including e-commerce, e-banking, telemedicine, and e-learning, would see impressive expansion. By bridging the digital divide and guaranteeing that individuals have access to a variety of online services, this expansion greatly raises the standard of living for all inhabitants.
