Due to rising water levels and bridge weaknesses, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has closed the Nyakambu Bridge.
The 1956-built bridge, which links the Sheema, Buhweju, Ibanda, and Mbarara districts, had already begun to show signs of deterioration.
The decision was made to close the road so that engineers could begin the bridge’s repair, according to Eng. Doreen Kukunda, the Ibanda area manager for UNRA, which is in charge of the construction of the Kabwohe-Nyakambu-Buhweju route where the bridge is located.
According to Kukunda, “We are soon going to start building various structures along a river to guide and confine the water flow in the river channel to control and regulate the river beds.”
As their team worked on the bridge, UNRA recommended travelers and other road users to take alternate routes and detours.
Masheruka Town Council LC3 Chairperson Charles Nkuruho requested intervention from MPs from the Buhweju, Sheema, and Mbarara districts so that work may be completed promptly and residents can begin using the bridge as soon as feasible.
