In an effort to address the increasing amount of traffic accidents, His Excellency Yoweri Museveni Tibuhaburwa, President of the Republic of Uganda, has called for a modification to the Road Act of 2019. This order comes in response to the untimely passing of his close friend and illustrious millionaire, Apollo Nyegamehe Aponye, who died in a recent car accident.

The President was represented by Vice President Jessica Rose Epel Alupo during the funeral services that were performed yesterday at Aponye’s ancestral house in Kitaburaza village, Muhanga town council, Rukiga district. In order to enforce tougher implementation and compliance, President Museveni directed Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka Nsumikambi to write suggested revisions to section 58 of the Road Act.

According to Section 58 of the act, drivers are already required to tow away any vehicle that breaks down on the road within two hours and to use visible reflectors or warning signs to inform other cars. President Museveni stressed that, despite this, there are more accidents as a result of the inconsistent enforcement of these laws.

At a touching ceremony, Apollo Nyegamehe Aponye was laid to rest at Kitaburaza Village, Muhanga Town Council, Rukiga District. On July 6, a collision on the Mbarara-Kabale highway in the Itojo town council, Ntungamo area, regrettably resulted in the death of the renowned businessman. His Toyota Land Cruiser V8, with the license plate UBF 300Z, hit a parked Fuso truck with the license plate UAZ 767D that was hauling Irish potatoes.

Around 9:00 p.m., Aponye was killed in an accident while heading from Kampala to the Rukiga district to attend Peter Tumwijukye’s funeral. Tumwijukye was a close friend and fellow businessman. Another traffic accident claimed the life of Tumwijukye, a resident of Bwirambere, Kyogo parish in Kamwezi sub-county. Tragically, Aponye passed away from his wounds right there, while his driver, Moses Buyinza, and Joshua Karamuzi, his brother, were taken to Itojo hospital and eventually moved to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for additional treatment.
