On Sunday, April 28, 2024, the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, officially opened the Huawei DigiTruck Project in her native Kakumiro district. A significant number of students, young people, parents, and district authorities attended the colorful event. The Kakumiro District Headquarters grounds served as the venue for the launch.

The Prime Minister asked the Kakumiro people to support such initiatives from the Ugandan government, which include Huawei Technologies Uganda as important partners, during the launch. She expressed her gratitude to Huawei Uganda’s management for introducing these programs to the people of Kakumiro and Uganda as a whole. ICT is the best option. Kakumiro cannot keep up with the digital revolution taking place in the entire planet. Uganda is progressing at an equally rapid pace,” the prime minister declared.

She continued by urging the students who had received instruction thus far to apply their newfound knowledge to further Uganda’s growth. Business owners can employ these abilities for marketing and record-keeping, as per the Prime Minister’s advice to the locals to go digital in their many fields of work. The project, which is anticipated to operate in Kakumiro through May 15, 2024, aims to train more than 400 locals, including women, business owners, politicians, and civil officers.

Mr. Gao Jian, the deputy managing director of Huawei Technologies Uganda Co Limited, thanked the government for its consistent assistance in bringing this effort to fruition. “Together, we are fostering innovation, opening doors to endless opportunities, and paving the way for a more prosperous and inclusive Uganda. We are not just teaching computer skills.”

Mr. Gao Jian exhorted the young people to take advantage of this chance with zeal and resolve. The abilities you get here will not only help you advance personally, but they will also benefit Kakumiro and Uganda as a whole. Accept the digital age, investigate its opportunities, and have the courage to dream large.

Maj (Rtd) Matovu David, the Resident District Commissioner of Kakumiro District, expressed gratitude to Huawei Technologies’ management for providing these services to Ugandans living in rural areas. Additionally, it has been reported that certain individuals in Kakumiro Town have been taking advantage of the community members to obtain free services like social security numbers and tax identification numbers. Others travel far to the district headquarters and Kakumiro town in order to receive these services, although they can all be completed remotely using a smart device.

The Huawei DigiTruck project is a component of the company’s global TECH4ALL strategy, which promotes sustainability and inclusivity. It operates in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor, Gender and Social Development, among other governmental organizations, in Uganda.

Our talent development program in Uganda also includes the Huawei DigiTruck Project. Other initiatives include the Huawei ICT Competitions, the Huawei ICT Academy (which offers training in various ICT courses), the Seeds for the Future program, and the ICT Job Fair, which has been running successfully in Uganda for the past two years in collaboration with the Ugandan government.

At the Kololo Independence grounds on International Women’s Day in 2023, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda gave the project its official start. Over 3,500 Ugandans have been trained by the Huawei Digitruck project thus far, with 40.6% of them being women and 59.4% of men. In three years, the objective is to train more than 10,000 Ugandans.
