KAMPALA. To track Kampala’s air quality, Makerere University College of Computing and Information Science has begun utilizing a 5G network, a high-speed wireless technology.
The college’s principal, Prof. Tonny Oyana, claimed yesterday that Huawei Technologies and the Chongqing College of Electronic Engineering in China were instrumental in making this possible.
Robots are being used by Makerere University College of Engineering, Design, Art, and Technology to monitor Kampala’s air quality as well as to anticipate the weather, he added, adding that humans lose focus after five hours of concentration.

Caleb Ye (R), an engineer in charge of technical training at the Sunmaker Oil and Gas Training Institute, presents some participants in the China-Uganda Luban Workshop Collaboration Program with equipment for the Internet of Things laboratory as they work to provide high-quality resources. at the College of Computing and Information Sciences at Makerere University.

“In Biotechnology, the College of Health Sciences can now operate using 5G,” he continued. Robotics is also being tested at Mulago Hospital.
When asked if the rollout of 5G technology would likely result in health problems like cancer as claimed by some scientists in Europe who wanted it stopped in 2017, Prof. Oyana responded that technology is about providing services via high-speed internet.
He said that such technology allowed Makerere University to provide 70% of its classes online.
He continued, “I’ve also read that someone is already employing the technology to keep an eye on his cattle farm in Mbarara while he’s in Kampala.

To create collaborations for the transfer of advanced science and technological capabilities, Chongqing College of Electronic Engineering and other Chinese tertiary institutions visited Ugandan universities and vocational schools in July.
Makerere University is now assembling a faculty team made up of lecturers and specialists to conduct surveys and provide training.
As a result of this agreement, 72 foreign students have been enrolled at the China-Africa-Uganda-ICT College with the goal of enhancing the IT professional training program.
