In the Yumbe district’s subcounties of Romogi and Arafa, Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, minister of energy and mineral development, has officially opened power lines.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development recently connected a number of other rural regions in the West Nile region to the national grid through its Rural Electrification Program, including the electrified sub-counties in Yumbe.

When the lights were turned on at Twajiji Primary School in Romogi sub-county, the minister declared, “The government of Uganda is committed to extending electricity to every village in Uganda.”

Upon seeing the first lit bulb put on one of the electric poles on their first-ever powerline in the area, the citizens of Arafa sub-county briefly entered a frenzy mode.

In collaboration with the Royal Kingdom of Norway, Kuwait Funding, and EXIM Bank of China, the government has connected a number of rural areas in the area.

Adjumani, Moyo, Koboko, Yumbe, Maracha, Madi-Okollo, Arua, Packwach, Nebbi, Zombo, Arua City, Terego, and Obongi have all undergone electrification.

With the assistance of EXIM Bank finance, at least 684.5km of distribution powerlines and 111 transformers have been extended to several sub-counties in the districts of Arua, Adjumani, Zombo, Yumbe, Koboko, and Maracha.

Under Kuwait Funding, 63.35km further of powerlines have been installed. The support of the Royal Kingdom of Norway was equally tied to the refugee-hosting communities in the districts of Adjumani, Yumbe, and Koboko, as well as sections of Kitgum with sufferers of the nodding illness.

The locals learned that the government would provide free connections to 47,944 people in the 12 West Nile Districts as part of the Electricity Access Scale-Up Project (EASP).

Moyo (1,067), Koboko (4,006), Yumbe (8,383), Maracha (3,947), Madi-Okollo (2,423), Arua (8,388), Packwach (2,748), Nebbi (4,484), Zombo (4,206), Terego (3,435), and Obongi (742) will all receive at least 4,115 connections.

The Minister remarked, “We’ll connect all homes that are close to the existing line but can’t connect themselves.”

“Use wiremen certified by the Electricity Regulatory Authority to wire your homes, and also apply for legal connections through Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited, which has offices in the area,” she advised the populace.

Many people, including the local civic, district, and neighborhood officials, attended the commissioning ceremonies.
