According to recent studies, 6.8 million of Uganda’s 9.3 million households make their living from raising cattle.

According to additional research, the cattle industry contributes 4.3% of Uganda’s GDP and almost 17% of the country’s agricultural value added.

According to experts, there is a huge demand for animal feed these days.

These sparked conversations throughout the two-day workshop at the Four Points by Sheraton in Kampala, Uganda, on advancing the feed and biofuel industries.

The topic of discussion at the workshop organized by the Uganda Animal Feeds Manufacturers Association (UGAFMA) and its regional partners is the development of technology that have influenced the production of feed.

The Minister of State for Fisheries at the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, Hellen Adoa, stated as the workshop’s primary guest that there is a significant demand for animal feed.

“There is a huge need for what you are doing. Examine the newest technologies to determine how you can grow. The government will back you, Adoa declared.

The sector is now facing a variety of issues, according to Marcel Franitza, sector Director, Animal Feed at Andritz Feed & Biofuel. One of these challenges is the frequent changes in ingredients/formula, which are driven by availability and cost. He listed the addition of liquid high-energy compounds as the second challenge.

In an attempt to maximize output, Franitza responded by calling for local feed production.

Many raw materials are at your disposal. Why not produce safely in Uganda? Produce initially for Ugandans and perhaps for export, Franitza stated.

Aimable Mbarushimana, the chairman of UGAFMA, stated that Uganda is able to produce animal feed locally given the raw ingredients that are accessible. Infrastructure was the only issue, in Mbarushimana’s opinion. But he claims Uganda can now produce its own animal feed and maybe export it to other markets thanks to the cooperation of renowned feed maker Andritz Feed & Biofuel.

It’s a good time, Mbarushimana remarked. “Now that we have the raw resources, we have the technology to create feed locally.”

Dennis Mulongo Maholo, the acting Commissioner for Animal Nutrition in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, stated that the government is currently seeking to improve the feed and fodder supply chain for resilience and efficiency, among other things, as well as strengthen relationships with Ugandan actors.
